This recording almost didn't take place at all. It was set to be made with the Lviv Philharmonic Orchestra, soloist Fanya Lin, and conductor Theodore Kuchar, but those plans were derailed by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. It is to be celebrated that the performers persisted with their vision, enlisting the Polish Wieniawski Philharmonic Orchestra of Lublin (Lublin Philharmonic Orchestra) in place of the Ukrainians. Especially considering that conductor Kuchar was the only native-born American in the room, this is a strikingly good performance of Gershwin's well-worn Rhapsody in Blue, perhaps with the flavor of a performance by players who haven't been exposed to it much and are discovering its riches for the first time. Sample the unusually flexible treatment of the big Romantic theme two-thirds of the way through or the rich detail in the earlier material, where Lin catches the improvisatory quality of a work written in two weeks and improvised at its premiere. The Rachmaninov Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini is very nearly as good, capturing the sense of irresistible forward motion that is the key to a special performance of the work. The sound from the Philharmonic Hall in Lublin -- from an engineering team that may have been working on short notice -- is transparent and pleasant. This Navona release genuinely qualifies as a sleeper.
