Although he now lives in Israel and was mostly trained there, pianist Boris Giltburg is a representative of the pure Russian school -- powerful, brilliant, and sweeping. Rachmaninov ought to be his métier, and so it is. For clean passagework at the highest possible skill level, Giltburg is a pianist to turn to now, and where the excitement is built into the piano writing, so to speak, the spirit of Rachmaninov himself will seem to breathe in his playing. Sample the Prelude in C minor, Op. 23, No. 7, which begins with almost impossible speed and then adds multiple counterpoints; few pianists can hold the whole structure gently in hand the way Giltburg can. The famous prelude that announced Rachmaninov to the world, the Morceau de Fantaisie in C sharp minor, Op. 3, No. 2, has plenty of monumental power. Where Rachmaninov offers programmatic mystery, or approaches Chopin's rarefied world, Giltburg is merely good, not great. But go see him if he's in your town on tour with these: he's the type of player to bring the crowd to their feet, and this recording is as good a place as any to start with him. Giltburg benefits from fine sound engineering at the entirely acoustically appropriate Wyastone Estate concert hall.

In your panoramas...
Nils Frahm, an Atypical Piano Master

Hailed by critics of classical music as well as amateurs of the electronic genre, Nils Frahm’s talent has brought harmony between the two worlds for the last ten years. Whether he plays on a church organ or a synthesiser fitted with effect pedals, the German pianist is always looking forward, and that’s what makes him so appealing.

Undervalued: a Look Back on Female Composers

From Sappho of Mytilene to Kaija Saariaho and Clara Schumann, several women have managed to break through the macho codes of the milieu and become composers. While the classical music landscape has been largely dominated by men in recent centuries, the work of their female colleagues, whether pioneers or contemporaries, is just as fascinating. Here we put eleven undervalued figures of female composition in the spotlight.

Jonas Kaufmann in 10 Key Albums

With his flattering physique reminiscent of a handsome romantic, German Jonas Kaufmann has successfully modernised the image of opera tenors, long considered as unrepentant tumblers… Beyond his powerful and versatile voice, Jonas Kaufmann possesses an immense repertoire in several languages, masters all styles of opera, from Wagner to Verdi or Puccini, and sings the lied or the French opera to perfection. A great admirer of Fritz Wunderlich, he started his career “the old fashioned way”, in a company touring around small German theatres before taking off on his own towards a prodigious career. After a chaotic year in 2017 due to a ruptured blood vessel on his vocal chords, Jonas Kaufmann seems to have fully recovered and is working on countless new projects. Qobuz looks back on his career, highlighting 10 albums.
