With 28 studio albums spanning over 50 years, the Mael brothers have carved out a unique place for themselves in the ocean-wide cosmos of pop. Smart and eclectic, difficult to pin down, Sparks have spent decades navigating the genre’s furthest realms, sailing seamlessly from glam to new wave. Trends and opinions have never seemed to faze Ron and Russell, these soon to be 80-year-olds, and the duo remain fixedly on their own path. “Do Things My Own Way,” the lead single from this delightfully unhinged 28th album, bears witness and tells us that the Angelinos aren’t thinking of changing their stance on things anytime soon.
Mad!, like each of its predecessors, remains faithful to the brothers’ trademark style whilst immersing itself in the events of today. Beneath the playfulness lies a deeper, fundamental questioning of the realities of 21st century life, ranging from the trivial to the profound. If the sometimes haunting keyboards (“Running Up A Tab At The Hotel For The Fab”), barbed opera-rock accents (“A Little Bit Of Light Banter”) and sonic sophistication remain timeless, the lyrics push forward, ironizing Jansport backpacks (“Jansport Backpack”), tattoos (the harmonious “My Devotion”), beauty standards (“In Daylight”) and influencer vapidity.
