You can't get enough of it! Of course, everything here is over-played, over-sung, even overblown. Every melodic contour is pushed to the limit with a pumped-up orchestra, singers who were already legends in their lifetime, not to mention a conductor who was one of the first to be “made a star,” but this version of Puccini's La Bohème, made in 1972 in Berlin, remains quite simply one of the greatest opera recordings.
The duo formed by Mirella Freni and Luciano Pavarotti, excellent childhood friends born in the same town of Modena, has remained legendary both on record and on stage, notably at La Scala in Milan and the Metropolitan Opera in New York, two theatres where they sang this opera under the flamboyant direction of Carlos Kleiber in particular. More than sixty years old, they played the two ill-fated lovers for the last time in 1996, on the centenary of La Bohème, at the Teatro Regio in Turin, which was booked months in advance and was an extraordinary success.
Technically, this is the pinnacle of grand stereophony thanks to the work of legendary producers, such as Ray Minshull who was associated with Decca for thirty-seven years during which he and sound engineer James Lock helped shape the famous "DECCA sound" that was able to immortalise the art of the great artists of the past. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Album review
You can't get enough of it! Of course, everything here is over-played, over-sung, even overblown. Every melodic contour is pushed to the limit with a pumped-up orchestra, singers who were already legends in their lifetime, not to mention a conductor who was one of the first to be “made a star,” but this version of Puccini's La Bohème, made in 1972 in Berlin, remains quite simply one of the greatest opera recordings.
The duo formed by Mirella Freni and Luciano Pavarotti, excellent childhood friends born in the same town of Modena, has remained legendary both on record and on stage, notably at La Scala in Milan and the Metropolitan Opera in New York, two theatres where they sang this opera under the flamboyant direction of Carlos Kleiber in particular. More than sixty years old, they played the two ill-fated lovers for the last time in 1996, on the centenary of La Bohème, at the Teatro Regio in Turin, which was booked months in advance and was an extraordinary success.
Technically, this is the pinnacle of grand stereophony thanks to the work of legendary producers, such as Ray Minshull who was associated with Decca for thirty-seven years during which he and sound engineer James Lock helped shape the famous "DECCA sound" that was able to immortalise the art of the great artists of the past. © François Hudry/Qobuz
