To say that Martin Brugger, Paul Brändle, Matthias Lindermayr, Simon Popp and Sebastian Wolfgruber play jazz music would be a bit of an understatement. Although each of Fazer’s members have very different backgrounds, they all crossed paths in the jazz class at Munich’s Hochschule für Musik und Theater. This Bavarian city has always done jazz in its own way and has been the birthplace of many distinctive labels like ECM, Enja or Act. Outside of their music classes, Fazer was also inspired by Talk Talk’s experimental pop, Fela Kuti’s afrobeat, Can’s krautrock, and Rhythm&Sound’s electronic dub. The ultra-organic sound heard throughout their album Plex seamlessly ties all these inspirations together. Each band member plays as if there’s no tomorrow, their instruments seemingly deep in conversation, sharing stories and ideas. The beating heart of this hybrid jazz is its two drums. Their improvisations seem to magically float on a solid polyrhythmic base and bring clarity to the powerful melodies. Fazer’s third album is full of innovative music and puts forward a fresh take on the genre. It’s no wonder they’re at the forefront of the German jazz scene. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

Tango: Sounds of the Río de la Plata

Rooted in dance and eventually becoming its very own artistic movement, the history of tango is an epic one; and its future truly looks limitless. A musical genre with hybrid origins, it remains one of the most incredible creations to come out of Río de la Plata. “It’s the only thing we don’t ask Europe for its opinion on,” wrote Argentina’s Macedonio Fernández, the man that young Jorge Luis Borges admired “to the point of devout and passionate plagiarism.” A number of coincidences in the late 19th century gave rise to this style of music. As musicologist Carlos Vega said: "no one really tried to create tango." And yet, here it is; complete with its own traditions and innovations, as well as its own golden age, ill-fated artists, myths and rituals.

The New British Jazz Scene in 10 Albums

Hard bop, hip hop, free jazz, groove, electro, calypso, experimental or Caribbean: the key players of the new British jazz scene are open to everything. They know their classics like the back of their hands though they certainly don’t hold back from exploring all kinds of genres, making for a wonderfully eclectic sound. Here we look back over ten essential albums.

Kamasi Washington, the Sax of Angels

After his major success with a triple album, he went on to repeat this with a double one! Kamasi Washington charms and intrigues well beyond the jazz sphere. Working with Kendrick Lamar and Snoop Dogg, and most importantly as the head of the West Coast Get Down collective, the charismatic saxophonist from Los Angeles brings an incredible wave of excitement to the contemporary jazz scene.
