Literate, lovely, and impeccably-produced music is rarely as soulful as Vera Sola's second album, Peacemaker. It's a slow burner and stunningly tasteful release. Where her 2018 debut Shades was about transforming into a singer (literally recorded in isolation; hardly anyone had ever heard her sing before), the time for gestating is over and she not only shows restraint and command but is some kind of new classic in the cinematic singer-songwriter genre. Echoes of the faraway orchestration of Ennio Morricone collide with a full-throated voice that never overpowers or shows off. It's hard to not want this album to soundtrack a film, in fact.
Recorded mostly in Nashville just before the pandemic hit, Sola worked closely with co-producer Kenneth Pattengale, who brought in dozens of musicians. That band proves to be as nimble and genre-hopping as the Sadies or even Calexico on some songs, then sweeping and expanding into a full, Dvorak-inspired symphony on others. Meanwhile, the upbeat "Get Wise" recalls Ralph Carney's work with Tom Waits on Rain Dogs, and showcases her humor as well: "At a party for ice cream/ Me eating, you watching." Sola's subtlety, love for exploration, and surreal humor reward repeated listens. © Mike McGonigal/Qobuz
