Anglican choirs made up of men and boys play a vital part of the British musical tradition. Most of the great composers of Britain have created works with the sound of those ensembles in mind, though they may also be performed successfully by mixed forces.

No doubt the best known Anglican choir is that of King's College, Cambridge, which, apparent by its enormous number of recordings made over many years, enjoys worldwide fame. There are, however, many other excellent choirs in the British academy, overshadowed perhaps by the Cantabridgeon; a fine example is the Choir of Magdalen College, founded in 1480 at Oxford. The Choir's latest release, Peace I Leave with You - Music for the Evening Hour, is a beautifully performed survey—happily not chronological—of music composed for Evensong, the Church of England's quasi-equivalent of Catholic Vespers, or Evening Prayer. The anthems are by well-known composers such as Purcell, Gibbons, Tallis, and Holst, and worthy, if lesser-known contemporaries.

The program is intelligently put together and superbly performed. Especially moving is Irish composer Charles Wood's rousing anthem, "Hail, Gladdening Light," but all selections in this recording will provide great pleasure. © Anthony Fountain/Qobuz
