Swedish double bass player Anders Jormin has been an icon within the Scandinavian jazz scene ever since the 1980s (playing alongside the likes of Don Cherry, Tomasz Stańko, Charles Lloyd and Bobo Stenson). His 40-year-long career has been as rich as it’s been varied, and now he’s considerably broadened the scope of his musical abilities and talents. He’s made a name for himself as a daring composer within ‘new’ music, composing pieces for chamber orchestras with hybrid instrumentation, improvised music, contemporary sounds, Nordic folklore and scholarly traditions from outside Europe.
This new album, conceived in close collaboration with singer, violinist and violist Lena Willemark (a leading figure in the Swedish folk revival), is a perfect example of this. Their musical partnership began on ECM in 2004 with In Winds, in Light and continued in 2015 with the album Trees of Light, which also included koto player Karin Nakagawa. This stunning trio is joined by drummer Jon Fält (Jormin's long-time friend from Bobo Stenson's trio) on this recent release, Pasado en Claro.
At the heart of this album lies the desire to explore a range of artistic texts from a range of cultures and eras (from ancient Chinese and Japanese traditions to contemporary Scandinavian poetry and passages by Petrarch and Mexican writer Octavio Paz). The quartet explores the full expressive range available to its orchestration to create songs with very free forms and full of nuance. There’s no doubt that the koto, violin, double bass and percussion serve as a beautifully refined setting for Lena Willemark's timeless, warm and sensual vocals. © Stéphane Ollivier/Qobuz
