A few minimalist, prickly notes are enough for the composer Jung Jae-il to illustrate the Ki-taek family’s miserable life, as they live their everyday out of a crowded, grubby basement (Opening). Thus begins Parasite, directed by Korean Bong Joon-ho, the most talked-about film of 2019 and showered with awards the world over (Palme d’Or in Cannes, Best Picture at the Oscars, etc.). After the Down and Dirty-esque beginning of the film, son Ki-woo manages to get himself recommended by a friend to become the English tutor of the ultra-rich Park family. And thus the tragicomedy which focuses on family and society slowly begins to veer towards the thriller genre, as Jung Jae-il’s score juggles between emblematic colours (pizzicato double bass and bells in Plum Juice) and decidedly more nightmarish and frenetic passages (The Hellgate, Busy to Survive, Blood and Sword). In these parts, his preference leans towards strings, whether they are electronic, traditional or classical.
But Jung Jae-il’s point of view is not only atmospheric, evidenced as he broaches Parasite’s main topic: the almost Marxist confrontation between two social classes. He ironically uses some upper class musical pointers to emphasise certain scenes. On one hand, there’s the clean-cut children’s choir that features on Camping, accompanied by a musical saw to translate the Park family’s naivety (this idea is also apparent on It Is Sunday Morning). And on the other hand there's The Belt of Faith, an inspiring piece of baroque music that accompanies an expertly crafted scene in which the brilliant but cruel actions of the working class Seoul family are uncovered.
