The German musician Christian Löffler is continuing his exploration of the archives of the Deutsche Grammophon label, which involved digging among shellac records, 78s  recorded in the 1920s and 1930s. The producer, known for his splenetic electronic works, revisited four Beethoven tracks in November 2020 on the occasion of the composer's 250th birthday. The version of the Pastorale reaches heights of reverie, and this nature-lover (he lives on the shores of the Baltic) stretches the string section towards the clouds. In addition to these four Beethovens, set at the end of the disc, Löffler offers reworks of compositions by Bach, Chopin, Wagner, Smetana and Bizet, often sampling the quieter passages to insert them with astonishing naturalness into his electronic flow. Convinced that German electronic musicians would have made excellent classical composers in the past, the artist's goal is quite clear here: to attract a new audience to “this timeless, wild-looking music”. ”When listening to the recordings, I got the idea that Beethoven’s music was actually very human and accessible but became somewhat unearthly with decades of replaying and overthinking it. I wanted to bring it back to the very basic feels”, Löffler explains. And he has! © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz

Trip Hop in 10 Albums

At the dawn of the ’90s, the trip hop wave overtook the UK with an electronica sound influenced by Jamaican music and hip hop beats. With their chloroformed rhythms and heavy ambience, Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky, Morcheeba and several other outfits invented a kind of dark, futuristic and often cinematic soul music. Here’s a spotlight on 10 albums from a genre with blurred sonic borders but a definitive musical influence.

Kraftwerk, 50 Years Ahead of Their Time

Kraftwerk, the most influential electro group in history, founded by Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider, who died of cancer on May 6, 2020, have always been ahead of their time. Ahead of technology, composition and stage performance, the Germans proved to the public that robots were also capable of emotion and paved the way for techno, new wave and even hip-hop.

R&S Records: When Belgium set the pace

In 35 years of existence, Belgian label R&S (founded by Renaat Vandepapeliere and Sabine Maes) has browsed through all the subgenres of electronic music. Most importantly, it’s been on the forefront of almost all of the revolutions in the history of this niche music scene: techno, house, hard-core, drum’n’bass and dubstep. Let’s look back on ten key moments for this label that became synonymous with avant-garde, setting the pace for the electronic music industry, and let’s dive into some of Renaat Vandepapeliere’s fondest memories.
