When you think of David Bowie, you think of the fast-moving, slightly scuffed vibrato voice. Pink Floyd brings to mind soaring rock. But mention Roger Taylor and you are reminded of a different legend from the 70s/80s. A regular drummer for Queen (for whom he also wrote a handful of songs), the musician is more than just a man in the shadows as he releases his sixth solo album, Outsider. The dashing septuagenarian is a skilled practitioner of elegant rock, where the guitars and the drums (which he plays himself) sometimes give way to a saxophone solo (More Kicks) or a reverb-heavy piano, all wrapped up in dreamy synths (Journey's End). That said, fans of more muscular rock will also be pleased with the second part of More Kicks, the subversive lyrics of Gangsters Are Running This World or the brass-laden Clapping Song. The album contains two covers from his own repertoire: he reinterprets Foreign Sand (from the 1994 album Happiness) in a more bittersweet tone, as well as Absolutely Anything, which was the theme song of a film of the same name by Terry “Monty Python” Jones, who died in 2020. © Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz

10 Legends of the Blues

For over a century, blues is still nourishing pop music of all kinds and producing great records. It's time to take a look back at the classics with ten historic blues musicians.

40 Years of Post-punk in 10 Albums

In the twilight of the ’70s, as the shrapnel of the punk explosion was still settling, the movement was already inspiring new groups. As New Wave unfurled, the post-punk movement represented a tortured, even radical turn. From pioneers Joy Division and The Fall to current bands Shame and Fontaines D.C., here’s a close-up on the landmark albums that electrified the entire music world and continue to fascinate the rock’n’roll underground.

Guns N' Roses, the greed justifies the means

As the sales of the legendary Appetite For Destruction approach the 20 million copies in the United States, who remembers today that it almost never saw the light of day? Not only the bonds uniting Axl Rose, Slash, Duff McKagan, Izzy Stradlin and Steven Adler were fragile, but fate seemed set against this band which seemed to be slow to catch on to Mötley Crüe, Ratt, Cinderella or Dokken. This is almost as a kindness that David Geffen had accepted to welcome this homeless band on his label. He would not regret his altruism…
