After a prolonged spell at Columbia Nashville, Tyler Farr signed with Night Train Records -- a subsidiary of Broken Bow Records run by Jason Aldean -- in 2019. About a year later, Farr released "Only Truck in Town," a mid-tempo churner produced by Aldean himself. Farr's big hits already carried echoes of Aldean's slow-burning style and "Only Truck in Town" sounds as if Jason could've recorded it himself, but Tyler's version is smoother and not as slick as Aldean's recent hits. The same quiet vibe carries through Only Truck in Town, an EP that's designed to soften Farr's redneck crazy vibe. Everything here hums along to a gentle simmer, so it's the arrangements that distinguish the numbers: "Soundtrack to a Small Town Sundown" is intimate and bittersweet, "I Wish Dogs Could Live Forever" makes no attempt to disguise how it pulls on heart strings, and "Heaven on Dirt" contains just enough loud guitars and keyboards to make it a pop tune, not a ballad. While it's true that the EP could stand a different BPM, the EP is nevertheless an effective makeover of Farr, positioning him as a mellower singer who has matured a bit from his rowdy early days.
