The Coen brothers’ film O Brother, Where Art Thou? is a retelling of Homer's The Odyssey that trades the Mediterranean for Depression-era Mississippi. For the soundtrack, producer T Bone Burnett likewise pulls off a time-traveling trick, employing an all-star cast to dig up early 20th century treasures. Folk legend Norman Blake breathes sweet life into "You Are My Sunshine" — the aural equivalent of comfort food. Credited to the movie’s The Soggy Bottom Boys, but actually with Union Station’s Dan Tyminski on vocals, "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow" is the heart and soul of the film and shines here in four versions. Alison Krauss steps up three times: with a choir on the lovely hymn "Down to the River to Pray"; harmonizing with Gillian Welch on the gospel "I'll Fly Away"; and alongside Welch and Emmylou Harris for an absolutely stunning version of the traditional "Didn't Leave Nobody But the Baby." But the most magical result is that the Grammy-winning album brings mainstream attention to the King Odysseus of bluegrass, Ralph Stanley, who delivers a breathtaking a capella "O Death." © Qobuz
