There’s nothing iconoclastic about this ingenious album. The title itself, “Night Music”, suggests an album that’s happy to sail in familiar, calm waters. The 12 variations on "Ah ! Vous dirai-je, Maman’ (Mozart), Nachtstücke, Op. 23 (Schumann), and the three-movement Gaspard de la Nuit (Ravel) are all “showcase works” in the pianistic catalogue of each of these composers.

Music of the night: like Ariadne’s thread, this album links—sometimes painfully, granted—these three great piano masters together. There’s a nice surprise is in store in the last track of the album: Nocturne by Ignacy Paderewski, the consideration and simplicity of which is tremendous. Lisiecki’s remarkable interpretation is almost more memorable than the programme itself, and his trademark muted playing puts listeners in a dreamlike trance. This is especially true for his impressionist exploration of Gaspard de la Nuit. In contrast, Lisiecki transforms Schuman’s Nachtstücke into vividly narrated stories, a testament to their natural theatricality. © Pierre Lamy/Qobuz

The Earth’s Song: The World of Gustav Mahler

What could have prompted Gustav Mahler to compose a work as unclassifiable as this one? Written between 1907 and 1908, a pivotal period in Mahler's life, The Song of the Earth occupies a special place within his oeuvre. It combines the “fin de siècle” spirit with the fascination for the exotic that was spreading amongst his peers at the time. Vienna was in turmoil when this music was composed, and the piece oscillates between the notions of farewell and new beginnings. With a lot of layers to peel back, The Song of the Earth definitely merits a closer look.

Undervalued: a Look Back on Female Composers

From Sappho of Mytilene to Kaija Saariaho and Clara Schumann, several women have managed to break through the macho codes of the milieu and become composers. While the classical music landscape has been largely dominated by men in recent centuries, the work of their female colleagues, whether pioneers or contemporaries, is just as fascinating. Here we put eleven undervalued figures of female composition in the spotlight.

Scriabin's Flamboyant Raptures

Somewhat overshadowed today by his compatriots Rimsky-Korsakov, Stravinsky and Rachmaninov, Alexander Scriabin is nonetheless a key figure in Russian music. At the beginning of the 20th century, the composer and virtuoso pianist broke away from the Romantic legacy to offer a unique and innovative musical language which no one would follow. His work, deeply influenced by mystical philosophy and synaesthesia, would undergo a dazzling evolution in barely two decades, interrupted by his premature death at the age of 43.
