Bill Evans does perform solo on occasion--sometimes solo with himself. In years past, through the modern miracle of "multi-tracking" (overdubbing), Evans recorded two classic albums of solos where he "accompanies" himself: the Grammy-winning CONVERSATIONS WITH MYSELF and its follow-up, FURTHER CONVERSATIONS WITH MYSELF. In 1978, he recorded another, NEW CONVERSATIONS, on acoustic and electric pianos. It's a beautiful set, with crystaline recording quality.

The program is the usual mix of Evans originals and standards. There's the heartbreakingly rhapsodic original "Remembering the Rain," the reserved yet buoyant swing of Cole Porter's "After You," the tender, affectionate ballad "For Nenette" (the late Evans' wife) and the oft-recorded "Nobody Else But Me" features a lyrical (what else?) and whimsical duo between his acoustic and luminous electric piano. If one Bill Evans isn't enough for you, NEW CONVERSATIONS ought to more-than-satisfy your craving.
