Naples was the eighth-largest city in the world in 1750, and it was a wealthy place of considerable cultural importance. Its noblemen and merchants had the money to hire composers from far away, like Johann Adolf Hasse (whom the Neapolitans called "Il caro Sassone," the dear Saxon), featured in the first slot on this release from the budget Dutch label Brilliant. The size of the repertory is shown by the fact that the performers here could put together not only an all-Neapolitan vocal program, but a specialized subset: all the pieces here feature a solo flute and are, in effect, duets for singer and flute. The variety of ways in which this is handled is attractive, as is the agile work of flutist Giuseppina Ledda, playing a copy of a 1750 flute from Turin. (All the instruments are modeled on historical examples.) Italian Baroque enthusiasts will also welcome the repertory in general, ranging from the only moderately known (Hasse, and Haydn's teacher Nicola Porpora) to the completely unknown (Giuseppe Porsile, represented by arias that serve as interludes between the little cantatas, Francesco Mancini, and even an anonymous work). The weakness is the countertenor voice of Antonello Dorigo, which has a raw, strained quality not at the top, as you might expect, but in its midrange. The countertenor voice is very much a matter of taste, and your mileage may vary. But sample one of the finales by Hasse or Porpora to make sure you know what you're getting into.
