A good retrospective anthology of Natalie Dessay's career has been needed ever since her retirement from the operatic stage in 2013, and this one fills the bill. In the case of the great soprano, the task is made easier by the fact that most of her solo albums appeared on a single label, Erato, as well as simply by the wealth of material from which compilers can choose. Dessay in the late 1990s and early 2000s, from which the bulk of the selections here come, very rarely did anything wrong. Natalie Dessay à l'Opéra does not include anything from the recordings-only phase of Dessay's career in the late 2010s, when she began to record for Sony Classical, but in that phase she focused on non-operatic material, and the collection here does its job well. The compilers do well to avoid a chronological approach, instead devoting one CD each to French, Italian, and German repertory (with encores from Stravinsky and Leonard Bernstein). Dessay's versatility was and is part of her brilliance, and she created different vocal worlds by nationality. Listeners will have their own "highlights of the highlights," but has any soprano ever made Mozart's Queen of the Night aria "Der Hölle Rache" sound so natural? Brought such sheer vocal charisma to Manon's "Obéissons quand leur voix appelle"? A few selections show Dessay moving into the vocally darker second phase of her career, and these too are consistently appealing. A variety of orchestras, conductors, and venues are featured, and the remastering smooths over the differences well. Certainly this release is a good choice for those new to Natalie Dessay, but it may also be that longtime Dessay fans will want to hear it as well.

Album Description

Strauss & Kempe: Elective Affinities

The name of conductor Rudolf Kempe (1910-1976) is indissociable from those of composer Richard Strauss and the Dresden Staatskapelle orchestra. As Warner is now re-releasing the recordings made between 1970 and 1975, Qobuz is putting the spotlight on the Straussian legacy of a precise, often incisive conductor, who always paid the greatest attention to the text and its charms.

Mason Bates' weird and wonderful electronic symphonies

What do you mean, you haven’t heard about Mason Bates (yet)? He is one of the hottest names on the North-American music scene. Born in 1977, Bates is a symphonic and lyrical composer as well as an electro DJ (under the alias DJ Masonic) – two completely opposing genres which he takes great delight in mixing. Around half of his symphonic and lyrical work consists, in one way or another, of electronic sounds. The majority of these sounds are “every day sounds”, which are prerecorded and later put into a score. On the release date of his brilliant opera The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs, Qobuz interviewed this extraordinary person.

Gounod: the Romantic, the Mystic

A major artisan of the renaissance in French music in the second half of the 19th century, alongside his elder colleague Berlioz, whom he admired, and his followers Bizet, Saint-Saëns, and Massenet, who were inspired by his faith in Art, Charles Gounod (1818-1893), a mystic and a charmer, a romantic in search of a new classicism, owed his fame to a few masterpieces, which have overshadowed his daring. A flourishing discography allows us to discover the diversity of his music: instrumental, vocal, religious, and lyrical.
