Two of the greatest orchestral showpieces appear on this 2013 release from Zig-Zag Territoires, played with extraordinary vitality and sensational color by Emmanuel Krivine and the Luxemburg Philharmonic Orchestra. Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, in the brilliant orchestration by Maurice Ravel, opens the program with vibrant musical interpretations of paintings by the composer's friend, Viktor Hartmann. While there are other orchestral versions of this piece, which was originally composed for piano, Ravel's arrangement has become the most enduring, and this performance demonstrates the full palette of tone colors and the extraordinary instrumental effects that make it a crowd pleaser. Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's four-part tone poem Scheherazade is another tour de force, and even though this popular Romantic score may not seem as novel or piquant as Pictures, it is still a model of orchestration and is beloved for its sumptuous melodies and stirring depiction of scenes from the Arabian Nights. The responsive studio recording in the Luxemburg Philharmonic's hall is clean, fully present, and highly focused, so every note is easy to hear, though the dynamics have such a wide range, listeners may need to adjust the volume level.

Danny Elfman in Ten Albums

From fairy tales to wacky comedies, from the most extraordinary orchestral works to understated pieces, for almost forty years now Danny Elfman has been crafting his unique sound and injecting it into Hollywood productions by the likes of Tim Burton or Gus Van Sant. We look back over ten albums from his career, exploring both his essential works and less well-known compositions.

Orfeo Orchestra: 18th Century French Baroque, Resurrected

Orfeo Orchestra (conducted by György Vashegyi), a prolific performer of French baroque music since its birth, has been honoured in recent years by both Palazetto Bru Zane and the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles (CMBV) with invitations to record a series of explorations of French lyrical music – both baroque and classical.

Julius Katchen: 50 Shades of Brahms

It may seem like every pianist alive today has tried their hand at Brahms - especially his last opuses from 116 to 119. But this hasn’t always been the case. Having started recording Brahms for Decca Records in 1962, the American pianist Julius Katchen was the first to complete the German composer’s entire piano works. Ten years later, the German pianist Peter Rösel followed in his footsteps, as well as a dozen or so others more recently.
