Embarked on in 2022, when she was only 15 years old, the recording of this album marks a new chapter in violinist Chloe Chua’s young career. Accompanied by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Hans Graf, Chua takes on a repertoire as radiant as it is demanding: Mozart's violin concertos.
Composed by Mozart during his adolescence, while he held the position of Konzertmeister at the Salzburg court, these works are anything but simple. Without seeking the spectacular virtuosity of other pieces in the repertoire, they require refined musicality, clarity of phrasing, and a deep understanding of the classical balance between elegance and expressiveness. Chloe Chua steps into this world with a blend of youthful freshness and artistic maturity that is as natural as it is rare, as if she were resonating with the young Mozart who wrote them nearly 250 years ago.
Her interpretation wears its mastery lightly; rich in nuance, where each melodic line breathes with spontaneity. Chua is not seeking to reinvent these concertos, but to converse with them, from a perspective akin to that of their young creator. The soloist, the orchestra, and the conductor harmonise with evident clarity in the instrumental dialogue and the flexibility of the accompaniment, finely sculpted by Hans Graf.
It all culminates in a free, vibrant and deeply personal Mozart. A reading that avoids mannerism to reveal the freshness and depth of these well-known pages, without ever betraying the style.
