Recorded in Paris during performances at La Seine Musicale in June 2021, this new version of Lucio Silla, an opera seria composed by a young Mozart, is nothing new for Laurence Equilbey or her team of soloists. They all presented a version of this work in 2016 during a European tour that took them from Paris to Vienna via Aix-en-Provence and Versailles (to name just a few locations).
The operas Mozart composed in his later years have long overshadowed the rest of his operatic productions. Lucio Silla, which was composed for the Teatro Regio Ducale in Milan when he was just 16, is a perfect example of an overlooked opera. It’s a piece that completely overturns the rigid forms of this operatic style with bold modulation and a subtle approach to the vocals. The innovative music is accompanied by intense passion: young Mozart perfectly illustrates the torments of the young Roman dictator and vividly describes the entire spectrum of human emotion. The score is also very demanding, if not challenging, for the singers involved. Particularly the role of Cecilio, which was specifically written for the famous castrato Rauzzini. Enthralled by his voice, Mozart wrote his famous motet Exsultate, jubilate specifically for him.
Most often given to female voices nowadays, this perilous role is splendidly taken on here by falsetto Franco Fagioli (who’s been gifted with the ability to link vocal exercises and vocal ornamentation with an incredible level of skill). Alessandro Liberatore assumes the title role, whilst Chiara Skerath plays Lucio Cinna, and Ilse Eerens plays Celia. All of them possess a vocal intensity that does justice to an incredible work that’s hard to believe was composed by a boy of 16. Mozart embraces the personality of each character with a foresight that’s simply astonishing for a teenager. Praise should also be given to Laurence Equilbey’s conducting, which artfully underlines the violent sentiments present in Mozart's orchestral treatment. © François Hudry/Qobuz
