Mozart's statements that he disliked the flute have to be taken at face value inasmuch as he chose, given a nice commission, to arrange the Flute Concerto No. 2 in D major, K. 314, from an oboe concerto rather than write something fresh. There's no shortage of recordings of the two flute concertos and the various shorter works for flute and orchestra, but making them really lively is a tall order. This disc, reissued at a budget price from a 1993 recording, intermittently achieves the goal. The chief attraction is the exceptionally seamless and lustrous sound of the Orchestre d'Auvergne under Jean-Jacques Kantorow, then at a maximally charismatic stage of his career. These concertos benefit from a light, ingratiating approach, and the listener to this disc will be enveloped by sweet sounds indeed. Flutist Alain Marion is on top of the agile leaps required by the figuration in the outer movements of the concertos, and he shapes Mozart's melodic lines in detailed and intelligent ways. But there is a certain sweetness missing from his playing. Hear the exquisite long-note entrance of the flute in the first movement of the Flute Concerto No. 2 -- Marion's breath control is impressive in this phrase, but many listeners may be ready for a playfulness that is not there. Issues of stylistic preference, this disc is an unusually pleasant choice for listening in the car or at a party.
