Neo Soul in 10 Albums

In the midst of the 90s when hip-hop was going through its golden age, a revolution within soul music was also underway. With Erykah Badu, D’angelo, Jill Scott and many others, the genre found again its class: an echo of the simplicity and refinement that brought to life the albums of Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield and Roberta Flack. After years in the shadow of the reigning ultra-commercial and soft R&B, the noticeably more underground Neo Soul, or Nu Soul, relit the flame of soul music and returned it to its roots in terms of both composition and lyricism. A brief but highly influential movement.

Philadelphia International Records in 10 Albums

One of the main sources for what became disco, Philadelphia International Records (celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2021), was the brainchild of a pair of session musicians turned songwriters and empire builders—Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff. Drawing on a deep pool of pre-existing Philly musical talent, PIR’s arrangements are nothing short of extraordinary, filled with dramatic string sections, a get-down, four-on-the-floor beat and tasty details like horns and vibes in just the right places.

How Kanye West Turned Hip-hop on its Head

Over the last twenty years, Kanye West has consistently changed the course of rap music and influenced his era’s pop scene like no other. Collaborating with Paul McCartney, Rick Rubin, and Rihanna, he has both revitalized the careers of Jay-Z and Common and provided a platform for Kid Cudi and John Legend. Kanye West remains a major influence on artists such as Childish Gambino, Drake and The Weeknd. Cast yourself back to the career of an endlessly enigmatic artist.
