In 2018, the popularity of post punk is more than ever on the rise. The same goes for shoegaze. With a foot in both musical gardens, Flasher expands the already long list of ambassadors for these typical 80s and 90s genres. Recorded in the studio of Brendan Canty of the band Fugazi, the first album of this young Washington trio not only sounds very 80s, but also very 90s. Led by guitarist Taylor Mulitz, Flasher excels in a sharp and angular style (Pressure) as well as in a more dreamlike approach (Punching Up). With bassist Daniel Saperstein and drummer Emma Baker, Mulitz authors an album that is not really transgressive (although an unexpected saxophone does punctuate Business Unusual), but that will undoubtedly delight fans of indie rock, for which he has impeccably mastered the codes and conventions, as displayed in the hit-worthy single Skim Milk. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
