Several of composer Michael Hersch's works deal with the breakdown of the human body, and cortex and ankle, setting poems by Christopher Middleton, is an especially gory example. Hersch's musical language is uncompromisingly modernist, but no one could accuse him of gratuitously seeking to offend audiences; his music here matches the texts involved (and the graphics for the album constitute a third level of grimness). The album's title work, setting poems by Fawzi Karim, is similarly somber. Of course, one's reaction to this music will depend on one's general attitude toward High Modernist composition, but it is certain that Hersch receives exceptional interpretations of his work here. Soprano Ah Young Hong is not defeated by the long stretches of high, quiet, vibratoless singing Hersch demands, and the impressive precision of the Ensemble Klang chamber group has rarely been so effectively displayed. Hong manages, in a difficult environment, to make the texts mostly intelligible, and the New Focus label's engineers provide full clarity for the upsetting utterances of Hersch's ensemble.

Album review
