France isn't the first European country that comes to mind when one thinks of extreme metal. But in fact, some impressive extreme metal bands have come out of France, including Blut Aus Nord -- and Glorior Belli is another name to keep in mind when the French extreme metal scene is being discussed. Glorior Belli haven't been around as long as Blut Aus Nord; while Blut have been around since 1993, Glorior Belli didn't get started until 2002. But these Parisians have acquired a very good reputation in black metal circles, and Meet Us at the Southern Sign does nothing to harm that reputation. Glorior Belli lace their black metal with touches of doom metal; black metal is their orientation, but there is enough of a doom metal influence in their sound to make their music all the more grim -- and the word "grim" definitely describes this 2009 release. From "The Blazing Darkness" to "There Is But One Light" to "In a Blood-Red Moon," Glorior Belli maintain an extremely dark, pessimistic, and gloomy atmosphere throughout Meet Us at the Southern Sign; no one will accuse Glorior Belli of providing happy or cheerful music. And unlike a lot of death metal bands (especially death metal bands of the grindcore variety), Glorior Belli aren't the least bit ironic. As a rule, one major difference between black metal and death metal is the lack of irony in the former; most black metal bands aren't known for their irony, and there is certainly no irony to be found on this CD. Meet Us at the Southern Sign is a compelling example of what France's extreme metal scene has to offer.
