The 9th is a heartbreaking symphony, perhaps in manyways. It starts with an arythmic heartbeat which movescolourfully from one instrument to the next. Thechoice of instruments is extraordinary and somewhat sinister:cello, horn, harp, muted horn. Mahler immediately shows ushis most mature, masterful handling of orchestral colours.Soon we realise that it is merely an introduction to a beautifulbut heartbreakingly sad melody played by the violins, sayingLeb wohl! Farewell!A most complex, extremely forward-looking, visionarysymphony follows, occasionally brutally interrupted by thosearythmic beats and leading finally to the most tragic andbeautiful ending Mahler ever composed: what he shares withus is his fading awareness of our beloved world.Iván Fischer
