Carl Loewe was a well-known north German composer in the middle 19th century, admired by Hugo Wolf, among others. He composed in various genres but was active for 46 years as a church musician in Stettin (Szczecin) and wrote no fewer than 17 oratorios, one of which is presented here. This seems to be the reason for his general neglect; history has not treated the church music of the Romantics kindly. However, this one, at least, is worth a new hearing, especially in this fine recording by the Arcis Vocalisten and the historically oriented instrumental group L'arpa Festante under Thomas Gropper (who, like Loewe, also sings). There are some veteran soloists led by Georg Poplutz in the lead role of Jan Hus, a Czech religious reformer and a key forerunner of Protestantism who met his fiery end at the hands of the Church in 1415. Loewe called this an opera without staging, and indeed, the work is unusually effective dramatically. It outlines Hus' relationships with King Wenzel (better known as Good King Wenceslas) and his wife, Sofia; his summons to appear before Church authorities, an overland visit in which gypsies prophesy his doom, and his eventual condemnation to death. All this is quite vividly rendered. The chorus has a dual role; it sings chorales (anachronistic, but a device any listener of Loewe's would have felt comfortable with), and there is a chorus of gypsies. Both of these are ingeniously woven into the action in the libretto by August Zeune and in Loewe's music. For those interested in the early history of Protestantism, this album will be well-nigh essential; it brings to life the story of Hus, who generally is little more than a page in the history books, and any choir might profitably hear or perform the work. The Oehms label rarely falters when it comes to engineering, and indeed, they do not here; the sound from the Himmelfahrtskirche in suburban Munich is ideal.
