This is the last in a series of recordings by the Maxwell Quartet that survey Haydn's late string quartets, combining them in the program with quartet arrangements of Scottish folk tunes. All have been successful, and this one landed on classical best-seller charts in early 2025. That is no surprise, for the idea proves instinctively appealing to a range of listeners. Haydn never visited Scotland, but he made dozens of arrangements of Scots folk tunes himself, and what happens here isn't so far from what might have been heard in an Edinburgh concert in the late 18th century, when composers and editors were beginning to notate (and thus profoundly alter) folk traditions. Physical album buyers will get no notes of any kind about the music here, but elsewhere, the group members have noted musical affinities between the folk tunes and the Op. 77 quartets they precede; this is easy enough to hear in Captain Campbell's March and the first movement of the String Quartet in G major, Op. 77, No. 1. One might object that the musical correspondent for the mournful Hector the Hero at the end is a piece not included on the album, the slow movement of Haydn's unfinished String Quartet in D minor, Op. 103 (and that there would indeed have been room for that work on the album), but this tune nevertheless makes a lovely conclusion. The Maxwell Quartet's performances of the Haydn quartets themselves are fine, clean, and on the dry side. They have plenty of competition in these works, but the Scottish folk idea is unique and fruitful, and one hopes that other groups will explore similar concepts.
