Anchored by the single "Almost Maybes," this eponymous 2020 EP is the first major new record from Jordan Davis since his 2018 debut generated three big Country Airplay hits. Given how "Singles You Up," "Take It From Me," and "Slow Dance in a Parking Lot" all hovered around the number one position -- and given how 2019's sleek "Trouble Town" generated little attention -- it's no surprise Davis decided to not mess with success, hiring producer Paul DiGiovanni to replicate the sunny gleam of Home State. Every one of the six songs here is cut from the same cheerful cloth, so the breezy R&B-pop of "Almost Maybes" feels almost identical to the sticky love song "Detours" or the Julia Michaels duet "Cool Anymore"; no matter the subject, it's bright, cheerful modern country-pop exhibiting a significant debt to Sam Hunt. Davis is at his best when he keeps things so friendly they're nearly goofy, as on "Church in a Chevy" and "Ruin My Weekend," two tunes so light and silly they're nearly novelties but they're grounded by DiGiovanni's dexterous production, which always has one eye firmly on the charts.
