A brilliant folk singer-songwriter, Andrew Bird’s 21st solo album sees him face his internal struggles. The prolific multi-instrumentalist is still out on his musical pilgrimage, and not a single sound goes to waste here. The sublime opening to Underlands is a testament to this, featuring nothing but muffled drums, a strong bass line and a few strings. The simplicity of the acoustic guitar (Fixed Positions, Inside Problems) and the violin—his favourite instrument—creates more solemn, melancholic moments. However, the rhythm section isn’t adverse to speeding things up, building bouncy summer tracks with unpredictable structures (Make a Picture, Atomized) that are brightened by a banjo (Faithless Ghost). Inside Problems was produced entirely by Mike Viola, who’s already worked with Andrew on a number of tracks. He was particularly involved with the production of the album These 13 (2021) which Andrew created with Jimbo Mathus from Squirrel Nut Zippers. This latest release was recorded live with Bird’s quartet, capturing the very essence of the moment. Only Madison Cunningham’s vocals were occasionally added to the recording. This intimate and carefully produced album truly makes you feel like the band’s playing right in front of you. It’s beautiful. © Charlotte Saintoin/Qobuz
