Arriving swiftly on the heels of his 2019 debut Different 'Round Here, the 2020 EP If It Wasn't for Trucks finds Riley Green keeping things largely the same, singing a bunch of bright, chipper tunes indebted to how country used to sound back in the '90s. Green acknowledges he may be a little "Behind the Times" with the EP's closing ballad and how he invites Alabama's Randy Owen to sing the other ballad, "Better Than Me." It's a good way to excuse a collection of songs so steeped in country traditions of boots, jeans, and trucks that it verges on the hackneyed. Green is an amiable enough vocalist that these gilded tunes go down easy but the memory that lingers is how he's a singer who could never find a cliche he didn't want to embrace.
