For Atlanta trap pioneer Future, consistency has proven key. Since rising to rap’s forefront with his signature blend of lean hedonism and slurry-voiced menace, the MC has rarely rocked the boat, issuing yearly projects with an increasing adherence to his chart-topping recipe. And though a longer delay between albums may have invited hope of reinvention, his ninth studio album denies that approach -- I Never Liked You is Future by-the-numbers.
Future does what he does best: ghosting his entourage of sexual conquests, orchestrating ride-outs in slick convertibles, and relishing in the perpetual brrrr of the money machine. ATL Jacob’s looping trap rhythms make a familiar battleground for headstrong anthems, while lighter touches on “Back to the Basics" and “Love You Better” service the more introspective side of his catalog. By virtue of this simplistic approach, most of these songs end up just slightly above or below par: the formulaic but fun “Puffin on Zootiez" immediately sets itself ahead of the pack with a drifting, blue-skied instrumental, while the tepid piano trap of “The Way Things Going" and the cluttered “712PM” are a dip below his usual bar. Six tracks chase that "classic: Future sound; all but two (“Gold Stacks” and “I’m Dat N****”) miss the mark.
The project’s collaborations play with bigger ideas, but have a wider margin for error. YSL’s Gunna and Young Thug make rich sex sound as unappealing as possible on “For a Nut,” while Kodak Black casts an unwelcome shadow over “Voodoo,” and the RCA-pushed Tems adds a hollow touch to “Wait for U.” Though Drake’s candid quotables can’t quite salvage the latter, he reignites the What a Time to Be Alive flame as he skates over “I’m on One”; EST Gee packs equal artillery on the single-word stomp of “Chickens.” “Keep It Burning” is the project’s sole masterstroke, an unyielding cut from the DONDA 2 sessions that fuses its monochrome "Fallen Angel" with the ravenous sounds of Future’s Monster days. The track feels utterly vital: its basslines bark from the ends of rigid chains as West waxes vengeance with a caustic “Cross me so much I got nails in my hands.”
The Wizrd proved that Future can still make career highlights after over a decade of releases yet the formulaic, playlist-packing INLY joins High Off Life as a mediocre interlude in the rapper’s career.
