After their excellent second EP French Press in 2017, Rolling Blackouts C.F are finally releasing their first album – with the help of Levi’s who discovered them during their stint at Brisbane’s BIGSOUND festival. Expressing their communicative energy − without a set plan, but with immense dexterity − with a guitar-drums-bass trio launched in a beautiful and frenzied race, Hope Downs ticks all the boxes of a successful album. Not so surprising after all, given how French Press so easily stringed together brilliant indie pop gems (Colours Run, French Press, Dig Up). With its spoken word and incisive melodies, the quintet from Melbourne holds on to this winning formula of bands from down under like the Go-Between or the Cleans. The band picked its title well, and this dry run smells sweetly of long summer days spent lying down in wet swimsuits. Simply pristine. © Charlotte Saintoin/Qobuz
