The music of Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, Felix Mendelssohn's older sister, has sometimes surfaced in connection with the ongoing rediscovery of music by women, but it remains rather underexposed. Hensel enjoyed support from her husband, sometimes of a patronizing flavor, but support all the same, and she was quite prolific, producing some 450 works, including many songs, over her short life. The quality of many of them is illustrated by the fact that some were published under Felix Mendelssohn's name out of a lingering suspicion that it was improper for a woman to do this kind of thing. What has been lacking is a good overview of Hensel's song output, and that is just what is provided here. The mastermind of the project is tenor Tim Parker-Langston, who sings on a majority of the pieces but also brings in a pair of female singers for variety. The quality of the singing is variable, but the development of Hensel's voice is unmistakable and distinctive. She was a student of Carl Friedrich Zelter, whose claim to fame is that Goethe preferred his simple, foursquare settings of his poetry to those of Schubert. Hensel's first songs are in that vein, but she quickly outstripped her teacher in songs like Abschied -- from the mid-1820s -- to a text by Ludwig Tieck. By the time of her death in 1847, from the same ailment that felled her brother, she was writing complex music that rivaled or even bested her brother's rather light output in the song genre. Any collection of music by women should include this release, which will find frequent use in university courses.
