With this recording dedicated to a selection of German songs by Joseph Haydn, Alice Foccroulle and Pierre Gallon leave their familiar territory - that of Baroque music - and present a personal, thoroughly informed interpretation of these songs, free of the many layers of varnish that have built up over the centuries on these little treasures of vocal music. It is free of the many layers of varnish that have been applied to these little treasures of vocal music over the centuries. Alice Foccroulle is accompanied partly by harpsichord, partly by pianoforte, and leads us across the narrow ridge between the Baroque and the Classical periods. The listener is invited into the Viennese salons of the late 18th century, where love songs and little philosophical or religious tales in German are performed in domestic settings. They are characterised by tenderness, intensity and humour, sometimes with a touch of cynicism. All in all, Haydn shows himself here from an intimate side, impressively realising the zeitgeist of an epoch in a state of transformation. © Passacaille

Fabio Biondi & Europa Galante, 30 years of freedom

The Italian violinist and conductor Fabio Biondi, notably famous for his rendition of the Four Seasons by Vivaldi with his ensemble Europa Galante, is one of the musicians who actively spurns the idea of separating and compartmentalising music. We take a look back at the career of one of the most versatile and open-minded classical musicians of our time, and an essential figure of baroque violin.

Bruno Walter, Memories of a Departed Legend

Listening to Bruno Walter’s recordings, in light of the splendid remastered editions published by Sony Classical, you tap into a truly humanistic culture. A tremendous conductor, music was his vocation, a way of life and an art of thought. His recordings have conserved his art vocal music, intense but never sentimental, thanks to a clear linearity complemented by a versatile rhythm, ensuring clarity, coherence and vigour.

Jordi Savall: Music, life and recording

It was a rainy October night in the Bugey. On October nights, it's always raining in the Bugey. It was around midnight. There were fifty of us, waiting in the cold, the wet and the rapt silence at the Ambronay Festival. All of a sudden, and without a sound, Jordi Savall was there, sopping wet in a white raincoat, like Bogart in Casablanca, holding onto a hard case shaped like a human body. Moving slowly, he drew out not a person but a viola de gamba, which he started tuning and stringing with the greatest care. And then the miracle descended upon the auditorium.
