This album of orchestral favorites by Edvard Grieg is rich with Nordic moods and tone colors, even though the pieces are performed by the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Sebastian Lang-Lessing. The fantasy and rustic charm of Norwegian literature and folk traditions were central to Grieg's music, and the suites from his incidental music to Ibsen's play Peer Gynt, the suite From Holberg's Time, and the Wedding Day at Troldhaugen all evoke Norwegian subjects. However, any good orchestra anywhere in the world can summon the atmosphere and re-create Grieg's scene painting in these direct and appealing works, and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra immerses itself in the music as readily and wholeheartedly as if it were the Oslo Philharmonic. The playing is solid and Lang-Lessing conducts with a secure beat and a sure sense of pacing, so the music speaks for itself without interpretive interference. However, ABC Classics offers only serviceable sound quality, so the orchestra's true dimensions and dynamics come across as a little flat with a modest range of volume.
