Until Columbia/Legacy released Greatest Hits in the fall of 1998, there weren't any definitive collections of Jerry Vale's biggest hits available on CD. Legacy's disc makes the wait worthwhile, since it's hard to imagine assembling a better single-disc collection of his most popular songs than Greatest Hits. The album focuses on Vale's heyday of the '50s and early '60s, containing nearly all of his charting hits between 1954 and 1965 -- "Two Purple Shadows," "Innamorata (Sweetheart)," "You Don't Know Me," "Pretend You Don't See Her," "Go Chase a Moonbeam," "Have You Looked into Your Heart," "For Mama" -- plus several tunes produced by Mitch Miller, and other well-known tunes, like his first record "And No One Knows" and "Somewhere," from the film Marco the Magnificent. Certainly, Vale recorded plenty of worthwhile material that didn't make this collection -- the concurrently released collection Sings the Great Italian Hits offers ample proof of that -- but this Greatest Hits is ideal either as a one-stop collection of hits or as an introduction to the incomparable baritone.
