Here is a collection of America’s finest tunes from the early 20th-century, by late Richard Hickox and the City of London Sinfonia. Two of the most famous works of Aaron Copland are featured on this album: the orchestral Suite of Appalachian Spring, and Quiet City, with its haunting trumpet part. It also includes, for the first time in digital, Barber’s deeply moving lyrical rhapsody Knoxville: Summer of 1915, evoking like no other composition nostalgia of childhood, and his famous Adagio. As a grand finale, enjoy Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue… but not the one we’re used to hear! It is here performed in its original version for jazz band, as intended for the Paul Whiteman Orchestra. Featuring Wayne Marshall at the piano. © Warner Classics
