Part of Mack Avenue’s wonderful Octave Remastered series, Gemini allows us to rediscover Erroll Garner in the last years of his life. Originally released in 1972, this groovy album was created along with double bassist Ernest McCarty Jr., conga player Jose Mangual and drummer Jimmie Smith. Supported by the omnipresent rhythm section, Garner plays not only piano but harpsichord too, revisiting standards such as How High the Moon, Tea for Two and These Foolish Things. The pianist also tackles more contemporary compositions, such as The Beatles’ Something. Like always, his unstoppable swing (one of the most recognizable in the history of jazz) radiates through this brilliant, multifaceted re-release. © Max Dembo/Qobuz

Keith Jarrett’s American Quartet

At the start of his busy career Keith Jarrett spent seven years carrying out all manner of crazy experiments with his American Quartet. Between the years of 1971 and 1976, the pianist, alongside Charlie Haden, Paul Motian and Dewey Redman ran some kind of mad laboratory in which the genres of hard bop, free-jazz, world and avant-garde would all come together. A spontaneous and interesting time worth rediscovering.

Jazz: A Woman's World

Excluding singers, women in jazz haven’t had an easy time making their way to the front of the stage. There are of course the likes of Mary Lou Williams, Jaimie Branch, Geri Allen and Alice Coltrane. But up until recently, female jazz artists have been few and far between in the male-dominated and at times rather sexist genre.

Betty Davis, The Funk Panther

Without her, there would be no Macy Gray, Erykah Badu, Amy Winehouse or Janelle Monáe! Despite having disappeared from the music scene for years, Betty Davis remains a pioneer of feline soul sisters. The ultimate funk goddess. She also brought electricity to a certain Miles Davis who she would go on to marry, if only for a short while. But who are you Betty?
