Swami John Reis is nothing if not predictable, but in the same way as your mother's cooking or the local burger spot you grew up loving as a kid. Since the ‘90s, he's released record after record of quality post-hardcore adjacent, punk-inflected deliciousness, leaning into surf rock, blazing trails for emo, and other times delivering straight-ahead garage. His resume is a list of crucial bands of the era and beyond: Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu, Rocket from the Crypt, The Night Marchers and many others. What keeps fans interested is not only Reis' quality and consistency, but also how his sound evolves from the blueprint to each new project. And while there is a specific John Reis style and execution, don't ever mistake any of that with simplicity.

All Of This Awaits You is, in a lot of ways, a pitch down the middle from the John Reis playbook. Though centered around his signature hard-driving, downpicking punk rock, this time around Reis lays in on keyboards and synths to add color to his melodic tendencies. The songs were written for an upcoming Hot Snakes album but then saved for a Swami LP as the tracks didn't quite fit that world.  With the passing of Reis' long-time Drive Like Jehu and Hot Snakes collaborator Rick Froberg, the secondary project moved to the front burner.  While none of this is exactly revelatory, there is something timeless and singular about Reis' songwriting that doesn't need trinkets or gimmicks to make the songs work. Opener "How Are You Peeling," along with "Ketchup, Mustard and Relish," "Privacy" and "Beware the Halo" are classic Reis in execution, one part demolition and one part demerara. But it's on his atypical tracks like "Shock and Awe" where he shines the brightest—using a piano lick as the center riff and an array of handclaps instead of driving chugga chugga guitars.

Reis has said that the months surrounding the making of All Of This Awaits You were filled with confusion and grief in processing the loss of Froberg. For a record written under duress and with those conditions, it's borderline unfathomable to imagine a more joyous and celebratory effort. Triumph over hardship never felt this meaningful, but then again a well-crafted John Reis album is pretty much inevitable. © Fred Pessaro/Qobuz
