On Fundamentals: The Best of the Early Years, Kevin Yost mixes highlights from his late ‘90s and early 2000s releases. Most of the selections were issued on i!, while a couple tracks come from his 1996 EP for the Guidance label. The mixing is subtle, so the bulk of each track is allowed to play out. It’s a sharp, well-paced round-up of his airy, lushly detailed house productions -- many of which are so musically developed that they translate beyond a dance floor.
