Francesco Durante (1684-1755) was a Neapolitan composer, the teacher of various composers including Pergolesi, and more or less the founder of the Neapolitan school in the 18th century. His Requiem was apparently well loved in its time: it was never published, but it has been found in more than 50 manuscript copies from all over Europe that have been gathered and edited into a performing edition here by the conductor Stephen Darlington. This is one of those cases where you can understand both the appeal at the time and the work's subsequent neglect. Its arias in the operatic style, angelically sung here by members of The Sixteen, have a Brahmsian quality of warmth that goes instantly to the heart, and the reason for all those copies must have been that people wanted it played as a comfort at their own funerals. The scoring of the work is unique, with three separate groupings: the soloists, a three-part (alto-tenor-bass) ripieno, and a full, five-voice choir, with the ripieno either joining the choir or setting itself off. That's elegantly done, but the blood-and-thunder sections of the Requiem mass are a bit thin here; sample the "Dies irae," for instance, with its bare string runs. The best news is the performance, joining forces from several venerable English organizations: in addition to the singers from The Sixteen, there are the Christ Church Cathedral Choir, Oxford, and the Oxford Baroque adding a crisp layer that sets off the smooth choral singing. One might easily imagine and hope that this grouping will return with other neglected Baroque choral pieces, and record them in the acoustically sympathetic St. Michael and All Angels Church in Oxford, used here.
