Three years separate Light Upon The Lake, Whitney’s brilliant debut album, from Forever Turned Around. In 2016, when Max Kakacek (former guitarist of the Smith Westerns) and Julien Ehrlich (former drummer of Unknown Mortal Orchestra) teamed up, their original take on rock, which was tinged with folk and soul, quickly earned them critical acclaim and a solid fan base. Their sound wasn’t unlike that of Girls (a group that Kakacek and Ehrlich often joined on tour), mixed with the melancholy found in Neil Young’s old acoustic records, Harry Nilsson’s ear for melody and Fleet Foxes’ careful arrangements... Our Chicago hipsters seem to have come straight out of sunny California in the seventies and here they are back for more with this second equally endearing opus. Nonchalance and evanescence are once again well-mastered on compositions that sometimes veer towards country, folk and soul - genres that are even more present than on Light Upon The Lake. Ultimately, Forever Turned Around has all the qualities of a timeless album, a nostalgic record saturated with the colours of an Indian summer... © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

Daniel Johnston, A Troubling, Troubled Icon

No one ever sounded like Daniel Johnston. The little known depressive artist found fame thanks to his peers’ recognition. He passed away on September 11th, 2019, at the age of 58; his discography has slowly become the symbol of naïve, lo-fi and hyper-emotional music. It’s never too late to (re)discover this bona fide underground genius, and his heartfelt, authentic music.

Tuareg Blues: The Rock Oasis

Since the Tuareg group Tinariwen released their first official album in 2002, entitled “The Radio Tisdas Sessions”, their guitar-soaked electric music has become a category of rock - one that is recognised and respected from Bamako to Los Angeles. This international success has allowed many musicians from the Sahara to get their music heard. And Western rockers have often been attracted to this poetic music emanating from the sand dunes and rocky expanses.

Britpop in 10 Albums

“If punk was about getting rid of hippies, then I'm getting rid of grunge.” It was with this sentence from Damon Albarn in 1993 that England invaded the stage previously dominated by Nirvana and Seattle grunge. Britpop is deeply linked to politics and local identity and emerged just as Tony Blair and New Labour were entering the scene. English romanticism was once again becoming attractive compared to the American identity, which was considered too hollow in the UK. Make way for “Cool Britannia”.
