After Benny the Butcher signed with Def Jam in 2021, his first album for the label was announced for release in August of 2023, and eventually was pushed back until early 2024. The effort's title, Everybody Can't Go, refers to him leveling up and becoming part of the elite, and severing ties with people that might have been holding him back and preventing him from reaching his goals. The album sports a big sound and some of the biggest guests to appear on a Benny release (Snoop Dogg, Lil Wayne), but for the most part, he's doing the same act he was doing before, this time on a bigger stage. He still excels at vivid storytelling, from detailed accounts of drug dealing to tales of expensive escapades. Songs like the triumphant "Bron" and the self-assured "Big Dog" address his ascent and his arrival in the mainstream. Almost all of the album's production was handled by either Hit-Boy or the Alchemist, who seem to respectively represent Benny's major-league ambitions and his grimy underground roots. The Alchemist, in particular, is at his eerie best during the bone-chilling "TMVTL" ("trust more valuable than love"). Armani Caesar, one of Griselda's secret weapons, shines on the brief, trippy "Buffalo Kitchen Club." "How to Rap," a Hit-Boy-produced instructional guide to success in the industry, is followed by the Alchemist-backed "Griselda Express" (with Westside Gunn, Conway the Machine, and Rick Hyde), which assures that "the Griselda train ain't stopped" even as its core members are moving on to bigger things. While Everybody Can't Go won't surprise anyone who has been following Benny, it does live up to his standards, and confirms his status as a major player in the rap industry.
