In 2004, John McCauley launched the swerve Deer Tick; much to the delight of fans of raw, well-written and unadorned rock'n'roll, who shrieked with joy upon discovering this young gang from Rhode Island resurrecting the ghosts of the Rolling Stones (Exile On Main Street) and the Replacements. Emotional Contacts is a soundtrack that brings together americana and rock, where worn flannels meet long hair and get dusty. McCauley's steady, nasally vocals, mixed with the half-classic rock half-alternative country guitars of his crew, give this set a rare, effective feel that doesn’t get lost trying to reinvent the wheel... Seven albums later, the Deer Tick, no longer far from forty, have clearly tidied up their bedroom. After six years of discographic silence, and even if their roadmap still resembles that of 2004, their guitars are more polished, the vocals less soggy, and their production is slicker. Steve Berlin, from Los Lobos, and the young folk singer Courtney Marie Andrews even feature on two titles. And behind the console, Dave Friedman (Mercury Rev, Flaming Lips, Spoon) adds a beautiful, but not flashy, polish to this classy and classic record, carried once again by the charisma of its leader, John McCauley. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
