The songs by three of the four composers presented here are responses to the devastation of the Holocaust, and one cycle is by a composer who was himself its victim. The only works predating the Holocaust are Ravel's Two Hebrew Melodies, and they fit well because of their lamenting tone, intense expressivity, and use of Eastern European modes and musical conventions. Czech composer Viktor Ullmann, who died in Auschwitz, is represented by Brezulinka: Three Yiddish songs. The aching simplicity of the songs is made all the more heartbreaking by the knowledge that Ullmann wrote then while he was a prisoner in Theresienstadt. Polish composer Szymon Laks wrote his Eight Jewish Folk Songs just after the war as a memorial to a vanished culture, and the poignant Elegy for the Jewish Villages in 1961. American Hugo Weisgall's cycle of popular songs from the Yiddish, The Golden Peacock, is spiced with piquant modern harmonies, but is firmly rooted in the musical heritage of Eastern European Jewish culture. Soprano Valérie Suty sings with penetrating purity and intense focus. In the soprano's upper register, where most of these songs are situated, she's completely secure and at ease. Pianist Vladimir Stoupel provides a responsive and colorful accompaniment. The sound is present and intimate. (The listener should be warned that the track listing doesn't match the actual tracks on the CD, so keeping up with which song is actually playing requires some careful attention.)
