Back in public life after having served over three years in prison, Robert King returns as the leader of his ensemble for an album dedicated to two of his favourite composers: Henry Purcell and John Blow. He is even the author of a monograph dedicated to the former and has edited several manuscripts. In 1980, he founded The King’s Consort, which involved a choir and a period instrument ensemble, with whom he made over a hundred recordings mainly dedicated to English and Italian baroque music.
On this album, the countertenor Iestyn Davies works with other talented young countertenors from The King’s Consort such as James Hall. The programme alternates between stage music and elegies commemorating the death of Queen Mary. Also featured is a truly angelic rendition of Purcell’s renowned O Solitude, sung by Iestyn Davies.
Considered a national tragedy, the premature death of the thirty-six-year-old Henry Purcell, probably a victim of tuberculosis, was put to music with the poignant Ode on the Death of Mr. Henry Purcell by John Blow. Composed from a libretto by an old friend of Purcell’s, John Dryden, this sincere homage by Blow remains one of the most remarkable works of English music of the era. © François Hudry/Qobuz
