Rarely are groups so perfectly named as Drum Island; the moniker is utterly evocative of their sound, a heady blend of isolationist dub textures and tropical rhythms lapped by cool waves of cocktail jazz. Dreaming of a sun-drenched Caribbean paradise from a snowbound Scandinavian perspective, this remarkable debut LP is both sultry and alien, its cinematic samba and conga grooves tempered by ambient elements all cold to the touch; floating not in water or in space but in the area between, Drum Island is a world unto itself, and a trip well worth taking.
