Belgian musician Kris Defoort is best known as a jazz pianist, but he also studied composition with Frederic Rzewski and Henri Pousseur, and is a close colleague of composer Philippe Boesmans. He wrote his second opera, House of the Sleeping Beauties, based on the novella of Yasunari Kawabata, for Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, and this recording is taken from the premiere production in 2009. The dreamlike libretto (in English) by the composer, Guy Cassiers and Marianne van Kerkhoven is set in a mysterious brothel in which the clients, exclusively old men, are permitted only to lie next to girls who have been drugged into deep sleep. The action is purposefully ambiguous, with a permeable boundary between reality and the imaginings of an Old Man who visits the brothel three times. Defoort's equally ambiguous score is diaphanous and impressionistic, skillfully creating a sense of psychological probing that inexorably builds dramatic momentum, even if it is seldom clear exactly what the narrative means. His music and his dramaturgy take Pelléas et Mélisande as a starting point, but the opera is distinctly modern in its overt sexuality and cinematic structure. Using speakers, singers, and a women's chorus, Defoort's mesmerizingly delicate score is performed with an ideal dreaminess by Patrick Davin, leading the Asko and Schoenberg ensembles, and by singers Barbara Hannigan and Omar Ebrahim, and actors Dirk Roofthooft and Katelijne Verbeke. The recording seems to have been made live, because there are some mildly distracting ancillary noises throughout.
