Chicago rapper Lucki's output grew increasingly darker after he arrived in 2013 with the ambitious and unlikely production of his debut mixtape, Alternative Trap. Ongoing struggles with anxiety, depression, and addiction were reflected in the druggy, bleak tones of 2015's Freewave and early 2019's Freewave 3 as Lucki's sound moved from dreamy to desperate. Days B4 III continues the rapper's tormented introspection, recounting troubles with drugs, failed relationships, and emotional pain with a sharp self-awareness. Fifteen brief songs make up the 30-minute mixtape, many songs dousing trap beats in swirling, dreamlike samples. Lucki's troubled lyrics and atmospheric, synthy instrumentals blur into each other, creating a continuous environment for him to dive deep into his misadventures and regrets.
